Tip 1: Get Comfortable on Camera

Being on camera can feel intimidating, especially if you’re shy and not used to it. Since video is one of the best ways to connect with your audience, it’s worth stepping out of your comfort zone.

Here’s how to get comfortable on camera:

  •  Ditch Perfection: Mistakes are part of the processfocus on progress, not perfection.
  • Film Often: The more you practice, the more natural it will feel.
  • Boost Your Confidence: Maintain good posture, speak clearly, and smile.

The more you film, the easier it getsso hit record and start building your on-camera confidence.

Tip 2: Plan Your Content

When you first start filming yourself, you’re likely to find yourself feeling self-conscious and getting tongue-tied. This is part of the processdon’t let this put you off.

A great confidence booster is knowing what you’ll be discussing. This will help you stay on topic and get the results you want.

Here’s how to plan your content like a pro:

  •  Create an Outline: Use bullet points to outline your key points.
  • Keep It Engaging: Hook your audience in the first few seconds, use engaging visuals, and keep your videos concise.
  • Consider Your Setup: Good lighting, eye-level camera placement, and clear audio make a big difference.

Tip 3: Hook Your Audience Immediately

With attention spans shorter than ever, it’s important to get straight to the point. The first 3-5 seconds of your video are crucial for hooking your audience, with the majority of viewers dropping off after 10 seconds.

Here’s how to grab your audience’s attention immediately:

  • Start With a Hook: Ask a question, make a bold statement, or show an intriguing visual.
  • Speak Directly to Your Audience: Make an instant, personal connection to make your audience feel seen by using words like ‘you’. For example, “Have you experienced…?”
  • Make Them Curious: Create intrigue to keep your audience wanting to know more.

Tip 4: Make It Visual

Now that you’ve got your audience hooked, it’s time to keep them watching til the end. A great way to keep your audience engaged is to make your video visually appealing. You can do this by adding b-roll, images, stock video clips, text overlay, and graphics.

Here are a few of our favourites:

  •  Insert B-Roll: While stock footage is available, it’s always better to film your own b-roll. This is your opportunity to share behind the scenes insight into your business and showcase your products.
  • Text Overlay: A great way to highlight the benefits of your products and services is by adding text. These can be bullet points or short statements that you want to emphasise about your offering.
  • Keep Your Editing Simple: Creating a visually appealing video is importantbut don’t overdo it. To finish your video to a professional standard, remember less is more.

Tip 5: Be Yourself

With the rise of AI generated content, audiences want to connect with real people more than ever. Video content gives you the perfect opportunity to be your authentic self, resulting in building trust with your audience.

  •  Be Authentic: Relax and let your personality shine through.
  • Share Your Story: If relevant, share your personal story or experiences to create resonance with your audience.
  • Employee Generated Content: If running your brand is a team effort, consider creating Employee Generated Content. This allows your audience to get to know the entire team and gain insight into your brand from more than one person’s perspective.

Long-Form Video Content Example

In this video, qualified accountant Nischa leads with a hook, asking “What’s the first thing you do when your paycheck hits your bank account?”

Starting a video with a question like this makes the viewer curious to learn more about their personal finances. With 242K views in the first three weeks, Nischa’s clearly doing something right.

The video editing is simple yet impactful. There’s no distracting background music, but she’s made the video visually appealing by adding text overlay and graphics throughout the video, however, they’re adding value to the viewer by highlighting the most important points.

Short-Form Video Example

Another example from Nischa is this YouTube Short. She hooks her audience in the first three seconds by saying, “Do these three things as soon as you get paid”, which again intrigues the viewer about what they can learn about their personal finances. Remember, whether you’re creating short- or long-form videos, starting with a hook is the most effective way to keep viewers engaged and watching until the end.

The video editing is again simple, with plenty of text overlay and graphics to help Nischa get her point across. She shared three points concisely and gets to the point, allowing viewers to maintain interest throughout the video.
